Posted on Wednesday, June 14, 2023

Our everyday digital experiences are in the midst of a realtime revolution. Whether attending an event in a virtual venue, receiving realtime financial information, or monitoring live car performance data – consumers simply expect realtime digital experiences as standard. Ably provides a suite of APIs to build, extend, and deliver powerful digital experiences in realtime for more than 265 million devices across 80 countries each month, supporting organizations like Toyota, Bloomberg and Hubspot.

Working at Ably means helping to build the infrastructure and technology that will power and shape the future of the internet. The opportunity in front of us is immense. But we can’t rest yet. And we’d like your help. As Ably enters its next stage of growth, we’re looking for talented and curious individuals to help us build and deliver the platform to power synchronized digital experiences in realtime for one billion devices every week by 2024.

About this role

You will be responsible for helping shape the future of our content marketing and publishing platforms. You’ll draw on your broad range of expertise across the web stack to design, develop and deliver improvements and new features to our marketing website, blog and deeply technical long-tail content.

Day to day you will

  • Provide technical leadership. You’ll be responsible for strategic technical decisions that help our marketing and content teams achieve their goals.
  • Deliver quality code. You’ll be hands-on with development to build and deliver improvements and new features to our suite of marketing and content tools.
  • Own and manage the delivery roadmap. You’ll be responsible for the entire lifecycle of development of our projects, including the development of new features, maintenance, bug fixing and testing.
  • Level up how we deliver content. You’ll spend time working in Contentful & Ghost, understanding our content models and contributing to them, as well as helping users understand how to get the most of the features you’ve built for them.
  • Oversee external resources. You’ll lead and review work by freelancers and others that contribute to our content marketing platforms.
  • Focus on continual improvement. Whether it’s deliberately refactoring code to make our lives easier or updating our processes to be more effective, you’ll work to improve content marketing through improved engineering practices.
  • Develop effective testing strategies. You’ll test your own work, and when needed walk stakeholders through how to best test your work before it goes into production.

We'd love to hear from you if you have

  • Strong HTML, CSS and Javascript skills, including knowledge of modern frameworks such as React & Gatsby.
  • Understanding of best practices related to accessibility, SEO, performance and security.
  • Experience with modern approaches to CSS, such as styled components and TailwindCSS.
  • Experience with designing and implementing frontend architectures, like component libraries, SPA’s, and server-side rendered applications.
  • A full-stack mindset and experience building full-stack applications with CI/CD, as well as understand and promote the importance of the latter.
  • Experience with writing automated tests for software with tools like Jest or Cypress.
  • Cross-functional team experience. You worked closely with designers and product managers in short, effective feedback loops.
  • A solid grasp of Agile, Kanban and SCRUM principles and experience working with stakeholders to create and manage backlogs and delivery of work.
  • Experience in dynamic, early stage startups where adaptability and resourcefulness are crucial.
  • A transparent and collaborative “build in the open” mindset.

It would be great, but not essential if you have

  • Experience with Contentful CMS.
  • Experience delivering developer-focussed products or services.
  • Experience with Gatsby Cloud
